Folic acid (B9)
Required for cell division and DNA synthesis. Deficiency raises homocysteine.
Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
Essential for carbohydrate metabolism and nerve function. Deficiency with alcohol use or malnutrition.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
Important for energy metabolism. Deficiency causes skin and mucous membrane complaints.
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Involved in protein metabolism and neurotransmitter production. Deficiency with certain medications.
Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)
Essential for nerve cells and blood production. Deficiency common in vegans and with metformin.
Vitamin D (25-OH)
More than 70% of the Dutch population has insufficiency. Essential for immune function, bone density and mood.
Sodium (Na)
Regulates fluid balance, blood pressure and nerve conduction. Deviations can indicate kidney, heart or adrenal disorders.
Potassium (K)
Essential for stable heart rhythm and muscle function. Deficiency causes cramps, fatigue and rhythm disturbances.
Calcium (Ca)
Bone building, nerve conduction and muscle contraction. Elevated calcium can indicate parathyroid abnormality.
Albumin
Main protein in the blood. Low albumin indicates malnutrition or chronic disease.
Magnesium (Mg)
Involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions. Deficiency is common and causes cramps, fatigue and insomnia.
Ferritin
Iron stores. Can be low even when haemoglobin is still normal — early signal of depletion.
Zinc (Zn)
Essential for immune function, wound healing and taste and smell. Deficiency with vegetarian diet or malabsorption.
